Interview Questions

Please tell us a little about yourself?
"I have three children and six grandchildren. There are a lot of things I enjoy doing, such as writing, painting, and travel... to name a few. In addition to being a DMACC instructor and program chair, I sponsor The Artery, a student graphic design club, as well as Skills USA, which is a national student leadership organization. I also do some freelance work and run my own graphic design business. As a Fine Artist, I have numerous one woman shows in the Des Moines area and currently have work displayed at Görtz Haus Gallery in Grimes, Iowa. My work and projects have taken me to places like France, Tibet, Peru, and other wonderful places." Please visit Professor Sullivan's extended biography for more information about her and the organizations she is passionate about.

How long have you been with DMACC?
"I have been full-time for 22 years and worked as a DMACC adjunct for a couple of years before that."

What did you do before you came to DMACC?
"I was a Program Consultant for a Center for students with special needs before my DMACC career. Also, prior to DMACC, I formed and operated my own business, Penny Sullivan, Graphic Design." Penny continues to freelance and run her company to this day.

What are your plans now and into the future?
"I will continue painting, traveling, writing, doing freelance work, and run my company."

What was your favorite thing about working at DMACC—what will you miss the most?
"I will miss the daily interaction with students. It has been an honor to be a part of their learning process. DMACC has been my home away from home and I have made lasting friendships here."

What is your most memorable moment as a DMACC employee?
"There are so many… watching the students graduate, become successful and know that they are enjoying what they are doing in life. Taking students to state and national competitions and having them do well says a lot about the high-quality training they receive at DMACC. A trip led by to Peru and hiking the Inca Trail was pretty amazing."

Do you have a favorite quote?
"If only I had more time to think about that… to come up with something profound…"

What would you like to say to the student body and/or staff as you leave DMACC? Advice?
"Just live life and have fun with it. I wish people the joy that I have experienced; it’s not always the case that you get to go to work and do something that you love."

Thank you, Penny, for all you have done for the DMACC community!

Penny Sullivan was a great instructor. Her creativity and presence will be sorely missed; I hate to see her go. Congratulations to all and thank you for your dedication and time at DMACC.

I met with Penny the other day (for this project) and met her in person for the first time. How I wish I had met her sooner—what an incredible lady! During this project, I got the chance to learn more about many of you and I must say... it must be a great feeling to look back on what you've done and how you have influenced and inspired others over the years. I can only hope that my life will be as meaningful when it is my time to retire.

Penny,
I first met you when advising The Chronicle back in 2001. You were very helpful in helping us with graphics and introducing me to our wonderful layout editor--Abbey Sprague.

DMACC is where it is today and so many students have been served so well because of the complete dedication of all our faculty and staff. Those who retire this year were among the ones who helped build our foundation of success that will sustain us well into the future. It is difficult to see such good friends of DMACC retire but we look forward to their continued involvement in our Pioneers Program and other activities. They will be missed and we encourage them to come back often. We say thanks!
